Phase coherent quantum mechanical spin transport in a weakly disordered quasi one-dimensional channel

چکیده
A transfer matrix technique is used to model phase coherent spin transport in the weakly disordered quasi one-dimensional channel of a gate-controlled electron spin interferometer [Datta and Das, Appl. Phys. Lett., 56, 665 (1990)]. It includes the effects of an axial magnetic field in the channel of the interferometer (caused by the ferromagnetic contacts), a Rashba spin-orbit interaction, and elastic (non-magnetic) impurity scattering. We show that in the presence of the axial magnetic field, non-magnetic impurities can cause spin relaxation in a manner similar to the Elliott-Yafet mechanism. The amplitudes and phases of the conductance oscillations of the interferometer, and the degree of spin-conductance polarization, are found to be quite sensitive to the height of the interface barrier at the contact, as well as the strength, locations and nature (attractive or repulsive) of just a few elastic non-magnetic impurities in the channel. This can seriously hinder practical applications of spin interferometers. PACS: 72.25.Dc, 72.25.Mk, 73.21.Hb, 85.35.Ds ∗Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected]

In recent years, semiconductor nanostructures have become the model systems of choice for investigation of electrical conduction on short length scales. Quantum transport is studied in a two dimensional electron gas because of the combination of a large Fermi wavelength and large mean free path. In the present work, a numerical method is implemented in order to contribute to the understanding ...

We study the low-energy collective excitations and dynamical response functions of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic spin-1 /2 chains. The interchain coupling leads to Néel order at low temperatures. We use the real-space renormalization-group technique to tackle the intrachain couplings and treat the interchain couplings within the random phase approximation RPA . We show that the system...

We present a theory of the effects of impurity scattering in dx22y2 superconductors and their quantum disordered counterparts, based on a nonlinear-sigma-model formulation. We show the existence, in a quasi-two-dimensional system, of a novel spin-metal phase with a nonzero spin diffusion constant at zero temperature. With decreasing interlayer coupling, the system undergoes a quantum phase tran...

متن کاملEntanglement of Electron Spin and Orbital States in Spintronic Quantum Transport
An electron within a mesoscopic (quantum-coherent) spintronic structure is described by a single wave function which, in the presence of both charge scattering and spin-orbit coupling, encodes an information about entanglement of its spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The quantum state—an improper mixture—of experimentally detectable spin subsystem is elucidated by evaluating quantum informat...
